Gentle Thoughts

Welcome to September!

I love September! It always seems a time for a fresh start. And if you're anything like me, you love to visit the stationery stores which are bursting with back to school supplies - pens, pencils, glues, books. Oh, joy! Doesn't it make you want to start a new journal?

If you've been playing outside all summer, now might be your chance to get back to your art supplies and be inspired by all the summer images still floating in your head. If you're a scrapbooker, it's time to collect up those summer photos and create some fabulous memories.

Many of you will be glad to know I've discovered how to easily make thumbnail images! I hope this allows your computer to load the whole newsletter without being overwhelmed.

Here is what's in this months newsletter:

and there's always more that I can't categorize!!

Changes to the
Printable Order Form!

If you are ordering by mail, you will notice that the
Printable Order Form

is now blank. I was getting so many products on that darn list that it was difficult to find them (even for me!!). Now you will just be filling out the items you need. Canadian shopper will need to visit the Bank of Canada website to find the current exchange rate and fill in the converted subtotal. Hopefully this will simplify things for all of us!!

Please drop into my other website: It changes every month!

Kalligraphia 2004

Kalligraphia 2004 was held in Lethbridge Alberta on the college campus. The weather was marvelous and the food to die for!

Although there were 5 days of classes, I was only there for the Altered Word and and one extra day.

If you'd like to see the class photos from that workshop, please go to the
Class Photos page!
There is lots of inspiration there.
I think they had a good time!

The cover photo shown here is from Mary's book which looked a lot different before altering took place!

Favourite things

This trio of profiles is my latest favourite thing!
You may purchase these three fabulous papers from me (as well as, but not including, the watercolour journal they were designed to go into!) as a set including instructions and template. It's so easy to do with decorated papers!

Send me your "Favourite Things" suggestions and you might see it here!

Magnet Swap

Ellen had this great idea to do little collages on those business card magnets that you can purchase at office supply stores. So. We had a swap!
Thanks to Ellen for hosting and for having such a fun idea. Wouldn't these be great on the front of a card, then the recipient could use the magnet on their fridge, filing cabinet.... you get the idea!

Stolen Moments

Reversing type for Copy Transfers

When you wish to apply words to your altered art using a chemical transfer such as the Chartpak Marker Blender, you need to reverse your letters or they will transfer backwards.... oops.

There are several ways of reversing your letters. Apparently some copiers will do this for you, but you can do it on your computer and then print them out. Remember this must be a laser copy or a photocopy not an inkjet copy. I use a drawing program to convert my type into a bitmap then flip it like below.

Once your letters are reversed, you may place the paper with the letters on them face down in position. Rub the back of the paper with the Chartpak Marker Blender and the letters will transfer.

byhand subscriber Diane Foster was wonderful to experiment with Microsoft Word to figure out how she could easily reverse the text. Here are her instructions.

On the Microsoft Word menu

go to Insert
Picture
Word Art
Pick a style (they are all changeable)
Then type your text, format as desired and click OK
Click on the text to get the box with the tiny boxes in the corners
Go to your Drawing Tool Bar (if not visible at the bottom of the window, go to View, toolbars and click on Drawing)
Pick Flip Horizontal and voila!
You can still reformat the text when flipped if it doesn't print the way you want it to by right clicking on the text and picking Format Word Art.

Thanks Diane!

"I like the fact that you let me know when you are sending my orders in two separate packages. Your personal touches, the little surprises you include in your packages and the items you find to add to your pages of available items along with your thoughfulness, are the reason I like to place orders with you.

Thank you"
