We Remember.....

Over the summer, the calligraphic communities lost two very special people

Pamela Barlow Brooks

As a newbie calligrapher I recall, with clarity, Pamela looking over my shoulder and saying my "S"s were terrible!
I immediately set about fixing that with many pages of S! I guess I must have succeeded, as she later hired me for my first calligraphy teaching job...

Pamela was an amazing individual. To me, she was such a bold person, totally different from me - she was a true artist.

I liked to sit back and listen to her viewpoints and ideas. I consider myself boringly conventional, so often her ideas of life and love scared me. The Pamela I knew in the 80's was afraid of nothing. A fabulous woman, always thinking and working out of the box.

Pamela was a founding member of the Fairbank Calligraphy Society in Victoria, BC.

and Pameeeelllla, where ever you are, I still smile when I think of you and an S!! Especially when they're upside down.

Sue Fraser

Sue Fraser was one of those women who you admire for exuding confidence, intelligence, humour and dignity. I want to be that way when I grow up and Sue is one of the first people I think of as an example.

Sue was chairman of the Westcoast Calligraphy Society when I first met her. She and Fay Nelson supported and encouraged me when I became chairman at the end of Sue's term

Although I met Sue in Vancouver, she lived in Victoria for a number of years where she was an enthusiastic and active member of the Fairbank Calligraphy Society.

Sue was always there if you needed help. She has been an inspiration and kind soul to many.

and will never forget.........

Books to Inspire

I saw this reviewed on the news the other day. They were talking about children's book.....*I* want it!!!

For the letter lovers in your life:

From the lenticular cover that changes with the angle of your hands, all the way to the Z, ABC3D is as much a work of art as it is a pop-up book. Each of the 26 dimensional letters move and change before your eyes. C turns into D with a snap. M stands at attention. X becomes Y with a flick of the wrist. And then there's U... Boldly conceived and brilliantly executed with a striking black, red, and white palette, this is a book that readers and art lovers of all ages will treasure for years to come.

MARION BATAILLE is graphic and book designer who has never before been published in this country. She lives in Paris. This is just a hand-made mock-up of the actual book which publishes in Oct. 2008. We couldn't be more excited about it.

A little dab will do ya!
Fun with Koi Watercolours
by Susan Miller

When Susan sent me the jpgs of her envelopes I was absolutely charmed!
Here is how she does it! Thanks for sharing Susan!

Talk about a * "little dab will do ya!"
One day I sat down and placed three white No.10 envelopes on my kitchen table and armed with my little KOI WATERCOLOR TRAVEL KIT painted up a garden of delights. I couldn't believe what fun I had in producing these little gems and how pleased people were receiving my creations.
Using the watercolours in the palette, some wild flower imagination and a little water in about 10-15 minutes I had some pretty neat envelopes to send out. There is a wealth of little sayings to go with these "Friends are like flowers in the garden of life" "I live in the garden. I just sleep in the house" etc etc

The kit is so neat as it comes with a water brush, a small sponge to dab your brush, a wee palette to make your colour washes and the paints. I've taken my kit on the ferry, to the park and long car rides- who knew these little kits could provide such creative fun.

* "little dab will do ya" is from an old hair cream commercial (Brylcream???) for all you under 50 year olds!
